This is Terrible news for college students – who are already under too much debt for educational loans.
The article states, “It really underscores the need for more personal finance education, specifically before students even get to college,” Johnson says. “It’s so important for students to be able to stay in school.”
Parents and churches need to educate emerging adults about the value and danges of debt. Stewardship should not be taught for the sake of the church budget, but for the health of the individual.
Here are some questions to check the state of your financial decisions.
1. What have you recently said “No” to buying when shopping?
2. Are there any financial obligation are you currently ignoring in hope that it will go away?
3. Are you currently saving for any future needs or wants?
4. Do you regularly check your credit card statements for evidence of fraudulent charges?
5. Can you write down an accurate list of your monthly expenses?
6. What have you recently given away to others?
7. Are you aware of your current debt load?
8. When is the last time that you sought to educate yourself to improve your financial decisions or position?
9. Do you avoid situations that cause you to recklessly spend?
